The Wrap-up

One of Germany’s many culinary shortcomings is the almost complete absence of quality Mexican food. So I came to Berlin last week, and we decided to have Taco Night. I’d had the cravings for a while and Lidl had provided a few necessary ingredients. But it was when a friend passed along some Taco Bell taco seasoning that all the pieces finally came together.

We amassed our fixings, including some killer pico de gallo, and had ourselves a lovely party. We had hard and soft shell tacos (thank you, massive German department stores with Amerikanische Speise Abteilungen!). I even made sopapillas, which provided the perfect end to the feast.

But today is the day after the election, and after pmk gets back from Disney World, chances are he’ll want to bring back his witty, wacky Japanese stuff and kick us back into our real, non-blogging lives. Thanks, pmk. It was fun.

So refreshing to read this post… I felt really embarassed in London when I craved (and couldn’t find) a great Mexican burrito. More embarassing was the seriousness of my craving that led to me asking a friend from the States visiting me to freeze a Chipotle Fajita and smuggle it through customs.

A slightly more serious correlation to identifying with differeny foods and such, there is a (now Emeritus, I think) Professor at SOAS named Sami Zubodai who wrote a bit about nationalism being expressed through culinary mastery in the Middle East. He suggests our sensual prefences are not so benign, but actually promote some foundational ideas for ethnic and religious rivalry.

Anyway, I hope you’re well—
